Beast Be With You
Exhibition – Anna Satharasinghe
Anna is an Alice Springs based sculpture artist with a background in textile design. Making things is her preoccupation and she feels compelled to combine humble materials using simple, direct methods of hand construction.
In doing so she is exploring life from several different perspectives: her coastal upbringing in SE Queensland, her connection with Sri Lanka – her husband’s country of origin, where the family spends regularly time and her current home, Central Australia. Palms, prawns and pineapples are popping up in the desert in an ebullient mix and a celebration of the diversity of life.
For Anna Satharasinghe – creating sculptures is an arena for self-discovery and facilitates greater understanding herself, others and her environment. The process is simple yet powerfully transformative. Smearing paint over one of the fleshy jute hand weavings, or drilling a hole into a prized piece from a sun bleached bone collection satisfies primal needs. A beastial zone – an animal nature comes to the fore, not influenced by reason.
Beast Be With You is the first body of work Anna Satharasinghe has created since moving to Alice Springs. She explains that she employed a “beast” theme explicitly to remind herself to receive the creative impulse from the wild, and to acknowledge that her move to Central Australia seems only to have amplified this desire.
Exhibition opening on Friday 24 October at 6pm.
Exhibition runs till Sunday 16 November.
