Blue Sky Portraits – Noel McLauchlin
The Residency Arts Program is proud to present Blue Sky Portraits, a celebration of our rich landscape, both human and physical, through the lens of Noel McLauchlin – the program’s inaugural Artist in Residence.
The exhibition features thirty two portraits of notable long term Central Australians who agreed to take part in a new social history display which is currently being developed by HAS for The Residency.
Brining an impressive array of lights and cameras with him from Sydney, Noel set up a small studio in a corner of The Residency and commissioned local artist, Franca Barraclough to create a 5 meter blue sky canvas back drop. His intent in using this vivid blue background was to ‘place’ each person within the context of the big blue sky we all share in Australia and which unifies us, regardless of our different life experiences. He wanted to capture the spirit and vitality of each person using colour, light and movement and so, in contrast to traditional portraiture; the resulting images are bold, lively and contemporary.
The exhibition also includes landscape images that Noel took on trips to Old Andado and along the Western MacDonnell Ranges during his two week residency. These works are evocative too, using subtle changes in light and tone to capture the softness of a landscape that is often described and depicted as hard edged and harsh.
Noel will return to Alice Springs in June to give a slide presentation about his work and in particular the work he produced during his residency. Anyone with an interested in photography and the traditional and digital techniques used by Noel in his personal and commercial work, is encouraged to come along.
