Marina Strocchi – From the Studio

The Residency Arts Program is proud to present exhibitions by two celebrated Alice Springs artists, Marina Strocchi and Wayne Eager. They will bring the walls of The Residency alive with recent works from their studios.

The recent survey show Marina Strocchi A Survey 1992-2014 at Araluen (now North and South currently on tour in the NT) chronicled Strocchi’s work from over 22 years. Marina Strocchi’s upcoming exhibition at The Residency picks up where it left off with works from the last year.

Strocchi’s work is somewhat iconic in the Centre, reflecting the artist’s astute observations of life in the Territory’s remote and urban environments. The images are familiar, yet ever changing due to Marina’s expanding library of ‘pictographs’ (a term she uses to describe her more recent works); exploration of colour, composition and new mediums. A publication, accompanying Marina’s survey show reveals an extraordinary body of work for a mid-career artist. Marina Strocchi – A Survey (published 2015) will be available at The Residency during the exhibition.

In contrast to Strocchi’s more literal approach to imagery, Wayne Eager’s paintings present an abstract response to the landscape. In 1982, he was a founding member of Roar Studios in Fitzroy, a group of Neo-Expressionist painters, whose work irritated the Melbourne art scene during that decade, gaining national acclaim in ensuing years. A major exhibition of Eager’s work is currently on show at the Araluen Art Centre. The works on display at The Residency will include works on linen and on paper. It has been said that he paints “the feel of being in the landscape”, achieved through a long, slow process of layering and reworking. He distils the essence of the landscape making references to the minutia that forms the grand whole.

Both Marina and Wayne have extensive professional art careers and are represented in major private and public collections, in Australia and overseas. We are honoured and excited to show their work at The Residency and to host their artist presentations.
