Obscured by Light Pamela Lofts and Kim Mahood
Exhibition Opening: Friday 24 February, 6.00pm
Exhibition open from Saturday 25 February to Sunday 25 March
Obscured by Light is a collaboration between artists Pamela Lofts and Kim Mahood, the result of fifteen years of travelling and working together in remote parts of the Tanami Desert. Through a series of photographs created by Lofts and accompanied by narrative fragments written by Mahood, it documents the exploits of Violet Sunset, a female adventuress in search of meaning among the ephemeral lakes and masculine myths of the interior. Her search uncovers a place where chimaera shimmer at the edge of perception, where presence is as elusive as absence and a journey is an endlessly proliferating web of misadventure and minutiae. At once comic and enigmatic, Obscured by Light examines the enduring ‘whitefella’ myth of the Inland Sea through a non-Indigenous feminine perspective that is ironic, poetic and informed by long familiarity.
only an absence, obscured by light,
and a shell muffled in red sand
that held the sound of breaking waves
