A National Gallery of Australia exhibition
Opening Friday 9 June
Resolution: new Indigenous photomedia presents the best work produced by Indigenous artists working with photography and new media in Australia today. Drawing on works from the NGA Collection, Resolution brings together some of Australia’s most critically acclaimed artists with some exciting emerging talents.
The foundations of contemporary Indigenous photography were laid in the late 1980s with a generation of politicised and provocative artists documenting their experiences around the events of the Bicentennial, marking 200 years of European settlement. The last 30 years has seen its maturation and the emergence of artists who engage critically, thoughtfully, sometimes forcefully, with the present and the past.
Resolution documents current practice based on that legacy, reflecting the diversity and dynamism of Indigenous artists who are producing some of the most provocative and exciting contemporary photomedia work in Australia today. Resolution is a physical, embodied and thought-provoking exhibition of works by artists grappling with the challenging, hybrid nature of contemporary society.
