Sarah Brown – Here

Opening Friday 30 June

Sarah Brown’s paintings are Here, instantly recognizable to those who live in Central Australia, conjuring memories of a Sunday drive, close and distant horizons, a night spent in a swag in a riverbed. The process and act of painting are forms of meditation for Brown, helping to place and ground her Here. Witnessing and recording the land becomes reciprocal, one informing the other, slowing time, heightening Brown’s senses, honing her eye, revealing the extraordinary in the familiar.

Acknowledging the complexity of country, the stories, the Tjukurrpa, the land as sources of spiritual and physical wellbeing for the Aboriginal people of the Western Desert with whom she works, Brown focuses the light and form, the colour and the contrast of the desert into her images, attempting to understand the many layers, forms and meanings of Here.
