Energetic, playful and brilliant, Spyglass Gypsies combine French gypsy songs with swinging originals. The ensemble brings the bygone days of bohemian Paris into the present day with the lyrical sounds of the accordion, clarinet and the percussive ‘la pompe’ of gypsy guitars.
Spyglass Gypsies launched their debut self-titled album of original music to a full house in February of 2014, and as Australia Council for the Arts grant recipients, they are set to bring their music to all corners of the country with their 2015 national tour. Established in 2010 by Richard Ashby and Loretta Palmeiro, the group formed through studying and performing together in various jazz projects. They have appeared at a number of notable venues and festivals including a headlining performance at the 2013 Oz Manouche Gypsy Jazz Festival (Brisbane). Along with supporting performances for international stars including Dutch guitar virtuoso Lollo Meier and UK guitarist Remi Harris, Spyglass Gypsies have established themselves as one of the leading ensembles in Australasian Gypsy Jazz.
