Tones of Light – Barbara Stuart
Tones of light is an exhibition of watercolours oils and mixed media depicting the light and dark tones and colours of the ancient landscape of Central Australia – by day and by night!
The MacDonnell Ranges are part of the focus of this exhibition, as well as night skies and the majestic Milky Way as seen from Central Australia. This exhibition attempts to depict their cosmic power.
As Barb travels and inhabits this land, she is constantly aware of its history and the effects of this on its Indigenous peoples and the land. She seeks to communicate her joy at seeing the land renewed by rain, as well as her conceived ideals of how it used to be prior to fences, farming and dispossession.
Barbara Stuart is a mainly self-taught prize-winning artist- in watercolour, pencil pastel, glass, fabric silk and oils. She has a passion for the Australian landscape – especially the vast deserts of the Australian centre and the Northern Territory. She also paints wildlife, seascapes, florals, trees, streetscapes and portraits. She has staged many solo and shared exhibitions in Melbourne and Alice Springs, as well as exhibiting successfully in the Warrandyte, Box Hill and Camberwell Art Shows. Her work is in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, The United States and the United Kingdom. She has initiated and undertaken a series of arts/reconciliation exchanges over 9 years between interstate women and Walpiri women, so as to foster mutual understanding and to celebrate shared goals and dreams between Australian women of diverse cultural backgrounds.
