Dr Philip Jones | Presentation on The Yuendumu Doors

July 21 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

In conjunction with our current exhibition of the Yuendumu Doors | Etching Suite, The Residency is pleased to present Dr Philip Jones, Senior Curator, South Australian Museum and author of ‘Behind the Doors: An Art History of Yuendumu’

Please join us to learn about these significant cultural works at The Residency, 10am Saturday 21st July.

Morning tea will be served.

The story of the Yuendumu Doors dates back to 1983 when Senior Warlpiri artists painted the community school doors with Jukurrpa (cultural stories). The Doors represent one of the earliest examples of Aboriginal artists successfully transferring their ancient ground paintings to a large-scale, modern medium. The designs represent more than 200 sites in the Warlpiri and Anmatyerre territory.
In 1996, twelve years after their creation, having survived the harsh desert elements and school children’s graffiti, the ‘Yuendumu Doors’ were purchased by the South Australian Museum for restoration.

In 2000 Paddy Japaljarri Sims and Paddy Japaljarri Stewart, two of the original artists, produced 30 etchings of the Yuendumu Doors under the guidance of printmaker Basil Hall, (Northern Editions, Northern Territory University). The resulting suite of prints subsequently won the 16th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, for works on paper in 2001.
