Fabric Design @ CDU

Using a range of mixed media and techniques to produce gorgeous rich original textile creations.

This class is suitable for printmakers, artists and crafts people with a range of experience.

The classes explore the textile printing processes of screen-printing and block printing, fabric painting and dyeing, and using a sewing machine to make your own simple textile creations from your own prints. We will begin exploring the world of fabric design by creating our own repeating designs. We will then carve lino blocks and prepare hand cut and/or photographic emulsion silk-screens for printing fabrics. Then create painted and dyed fabrics to print our lino blocks and screens onto. We will then sew them together into bags, cushion covers, wall hangings or simple items of clothing.

For this class you will need to bring:
4 metres of calico or very light coloured cotton fabric
Sketchbook / journal
HB, 2B Pencils, eraser, fineliner, black sharpie
Set of lino-carvinging tools
100mm sponge roller
A Lino block (Light grey hessian backed piece of lino is best)
Work apron, and a pack of disposable gloves
Later you will need: Cotton fabrics (any colour), or coloured sheets
which must contain more than 50% cotton.

We will provide:
Silk-screens, squeegees, printing materials, fabric paints, and sewing machines.

If you would like to you may provide your own screen, thus keeping your design
for re-printing. Otherwise the screens remain the property of CDU.
