Physically prepare megafauna fossils held at MAGNT’s Megafauna Central facility in Alice Springs.

Location: Megafauna Central, Alice Springs
Terms: 5 weeks full-time or equivalent part-time
Package: $52,700 pa (pro rata) + 10% super
Responsible to: Senior Collections Manager, Natural Sciences

MAGNT has seven venues: MAGNT Darwin (Bullocky Point), the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre), Megafauna Central and the Alcoota fossil site. A new Art Gallery opening in Darwin’s CBD in 2023 will add an eighth MAGNT site.

This position will be primarily based at Megafauna Central but may also involve duties at the Museum of Central Australia, both located in Alice Springs.

Primary Objective:
Physically prepare megafauna fossils held at MAGNT’s Megafauna Central facility in Alice Springs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Remove megafauna fossils from their plaster jackets and prepare the specimens to appropriate museum standards.
  2. Occasionally perform other duties to assist Earth Sciences staff as required.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Relevant experience in preparing fragile fossil specimens.
  2. Knowledge of the techniques involved in preparing fossils for museum collections.
  3. Excellent organisational skills, with proven ability to work as part of a small team under supervision.
  4. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and beliefs.
  5. Understanding of the principles of Work Health & Safety and how these relate to safe office and preparatory workshop practices.
