Claire has recently moved to Mparntwe after spending the last four years living and working in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of Western Australia. This is her first open studio of handbuilt ceramic works.
My creative process is intuitive, experimental, and explorative. As a European settler living in Central Australia, my relationship to the land is superficial when I walk my eye is drawn to landforms, plants and colours. Using various found clays I have sourced specifically around Irrunytju Community, on the tri-state border of NT, SA and WA with permission from local artists. I create hand-built coil forms that respond both to my European history and the Australian desert landscape. The work is pit fired using the local mulga hardwood. The black markings on the finished works are random and result from the placement of the works in the pit. Highlighting fragility, some works do not always come out of the fire in one piece, some are rejoined using a variation of Kintsugi.
Opening: Sunday 17 July 3-5pm.
Monday 18 – Friday 22 8am -10am or by appointment. 0415 876 170
