From founding a department store in Sydney in 1864 to running a pastoral station singlehandedly in Central Australia in the 1920s, women have been challenging the stereotype of ‘a woman’s place is in the home’ for over 200 years.

Following the example of the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame here in Alice Springs with its HerStory Archive, this talk introduces some of these ‘challenging’ women of Australia – who crossed boundaries. In between are some fascinating characters: bigamists and businesswomen, travelling entertainers and outspoken missionaries.
