In 2016, the inaugural Vincent Lingiari Art Award commemorated the 50th anniversary of the historic Wave Hill Walk Off and 40 years since the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 was enacted by the Australian Parliament.
This year, Desart in partnership with the Central Land Council and Tangentyere Artists, present the 2019 Vincent Lingiari Award, ‘Our Country – True Story’. The theme reflects the sentiments of the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart, calling for a First Nations Voice to be enshrined in the Constitution and a Makarrata (agreement-making & truth-telling) Commission.
Rights to land is fundamental to the social, religious, economic and political identity of Aboriginal peoples’ in the NT.
For over 40 years the CLC on behalf of traditional Aboriginal land owners has secured significant areas of land for the benefit of Aboriginal people and this exhibition aims to celebrate these significant achievements.
The 2019 Vincent Lingiari Art Award exhibition ‘Our Country – True Story’ will open at Tangentyere Artists Gallery, 16 Fogarty Street, Alice Springs on September 4th, 2019 at 6pm. The exhibition runs until October 18, Monday – Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturdays 10am – 2pm.
