The Alice Springs Library is an essential part of the Central Australian community. It is utilised as a hub to meet, hang out, work, play, study, exhibit and hold an event. The Library hosts scores of community events each year, for a variety of ages and groups. We’re always looking to collaborate with local and interstate authors, artists, speakers, teachers and creatives. Please get in touch or swing by if you have a great idea, and you’d like to work with us or use the Library space.

Public Talk: ‘Misguided Crank? Missionary Annie Lock in Central Australia’ by Dr Cath Bishop

Annie Lock was labelled by the Enquiry into the Coniston Massacre as ‘a woman missionary living amongst naked blacks thus lowering their respect for white people’. A visiting doctor described her as a ‘misguided crank’. To others, however, Lock was a missionary heroine - nursing the sick, caring for children and demanding the protection of Aboriginal women from white men and helping to publicise the Coniston Massacre. In April 2018, through some local connections, the Café Art Australia team from Sydney visited Alice Springs for the first time and connected with Territory Families, Catholic Care and St Joseph’s School.  Fifty cameras were distributed to Aboriginal youth and adults as well as privately within the wider Alice Springs area, Santa Teresa, and Ntaria. Participants used the cameras for 2 weeks and were invited to take pictures of their daily lives.  In October 2018, the cameras were collected.  Over…
